Can I apply DuroGrit with a spray gun?Updated 4 months ago
Yes, DuroGrit can be sprayed. A standard air-atomizing spray gun or an airless sprayer may be used.
Recommended Settings
For good spraying results use the following settings/adjustments:
- Air-atomizing spray gun
- Fluid-tip of at least 1.8-2MM (nothing smaller).
- Adjust air pressure up until an even spray pattern is achieved (this varies depending on the gun type). Dilution with up to 20% water is usually required.
- Airless sprayer
- Pump pressure of about 1500-1700PSI.
- Fluid filter size of at least a 60-mesh (not finer)
- Fine Finish Low Pressure (FFLP) Spray-tip of 210, 310, 410, or 510 for fine finishing of doors or window frames. Or a slightly larger size of 212, 312, 412, or 512 for larger projects like fences, pergolas, siding, or paneling.
- If needed dilute up to 20% with clean water, start with 5% and go up in 5% increments until a nice spray pattern is achieved.
Understanding Spray Tips
The first number in the spray-tip size identification refers to the spray width (which you multiply by 2) @ about a 12” distance of the spray gun from the wood surface. So, a 412 tip sprays an 8” wide pattern at a distance of 12”.
The second and third number refers to the spray-tip orifice, the larger that number is the more product gets pushed through that tip opening. So, a 412 tip applies more product than a 410 tip.
Back-brushing
When you spray a nice even coat on smooth surfaces, back-brushing is not desired or needed.
On rough-sawn wood surfaces, it is good practice to spray from two opposing directions. This way you hit the “peaks and valleys” of the rough-sawn structured wood surface. In that case, it is best to select the slightly smaller spray-tip to avoid applying too much product.
When there are many surface checks in weathered wood it’s a good idea to back-brush immediately to work the applied product in these checks and cracks to ensure these are properly sealed. DuroGrit dries quickly, so there is little time for back-brushing.
If you decide to back-brush, it needs to take place quickly, before DuroGrit begins to get tacky. You may require one person spraying and another back-brushing. On extremely coarse or rough-sawn wood surfaces, you may try back-rolling with a paint roller, but again, don’t get far ahead with the spraying.
